The benefit of the Roll 'n' Roll machine process to the consortium is given by the figure on the left. The figure depicts the preliminary, recently developed design of NanoWeld® production line. The consolidation process is the key process of the production and by upgrading its performance through Roll 'n' Roll machine, the consortium will obtain a competitive advantage in terms of manufacturing capability in the market of technical fabrics and prepregs. The potential use of the machine and its control system in other fields of applications will give extra value in the development of Roll 'n' Roll as an independent product or service for other markets.
The project shows a clear potential of innovation from the following points:
The development of a R2R process where heat is applied from the roll toward the material under process;
The development of a R2R process where heat is applied on material surface through a pattern and not through the entire surface;
The development of a R2R process where heat is controlled and adapted together with speed and pressure based on the characteristics of the material to be processed;
The development of an adaptive non-linear feedback control system with temperature as "process state" and electrical supply as "control input".
